Multi-State LTC Guide

Some agents sell in multiple states, and therefore need to satisfy the training requirements of several jurisdictions. We understand that carrier and state regulations can be very confusing when agents sell across state borders or with multiple carriers.

This page is meant to serve as a "cheat sheet" to help point you in the right direction for your training. The grid shown below is provided as a quick reference guide for understanding which training must be completed for LTC compliance, in particular for those agents selling in multiple states.

** Disclaimer **

This page is for reference only. We have done our best to ensure this an accurate representation of those requirements as published by the states and carriers. However, rules and situations are varied and do sometimes change, so make sure to confirm your training requirements with your carrier or compliance personnel prior to enrolling for a course.

Reciprocity

Training in your home state will often satisfy training in another state. This is easily identifiable below when both states are marked as NAIC which means when the state adopted their training guidelines they did so following the recommended curriculum from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). If a state you sell in says State Specific then you should expect there will be some additional training materials within your content if you are a resident; and an additional training supplement to take if you are a non-resident selling in that state.

If you are selling in one of the Original Four (California, Connecticut, Indiana, and New York) then you should know by now that you're what we like to think of as "special". You will need to take your own training which is completely different and has been in existence long before the NAIC put any model in place.

If you sell in a state that has an asterisk (State Specific*) then you are selling product in a state that went so far from the recommendations that your training is about as unique as one of the Original Four. In some cases you need to take less training (Delaware and Utah) while in others you need to take more (Colorado). Reciprocity with these states gets very tricky and there are some ways to help make it work to your advantage. Review your training guidelines thoroughly and then discuss with your carrier, compliance personnel, or give your education provider a call to best determine which courses you should complete.

To best understand which states will accept training from another, we strongly recommend you review your state's requirements published on ClearCert. ClearCert is an independent third party that monitors agent completion data for the benefit of the carriers.

Multi-State Training Guide

Check the grid below to see what type of training each of your state's requires. If you sell across state borders then here are some guidelines we usually provide when asked which class combination to take:

If every state you sell in is listed as NAIC - take your training in your resident license state so you can be sure to receive insurance CE towards your license renewal. The rest of the states you sell in should accept your training reciprocally.

If you sell in states marked as NAIC, but also a few listed as State Specific - if your home state is State Specific then start with that so you get the insurance CE like we discussed above. If your home state is NAIC, then I would find the strictest State Specific state you sell in and take their initial training without the insurance CE. Here's why I recommend this - the NAIC states should accept it reciprocally since the content you take in a State Specific state is more robust than what you would have taken in the NAIC state. If you sell in more than one listed as State Specific then you'll likely have to do something for each so take a look at the grid below and see if there are supplemental courses you need to take as a non-resident. Be prepared to take those.

If you sell in states marked as NAIC, State Specific and one of the Original Four - I mentioned it above and I'll say it again, you're something special. You are quite the agent and I bet you are so busy with all these states you don't have time for training. Unfortunately you'll have the most to do.  You'll need to take the training mandated in each original state and then you'll also need to do the same as the guys above depending on if you're NAIC, State Specific, or both.
